Lazortron

The next time a longtime wrestling fan talls you how much different things were back in the 80's, don't believe the hype. Just like today, in the 1980's, the WWF was the undisputed leader of the industry, and WCW (or its' predecessor, the NWA), tried to close the gap between the two feds by emulating the WWF. And, like today, they usually failed miserably. Unfortunately, unlike today, the WWF wasn't exactly cutting edge entertainment, as the average age of their fanbase was app. 11 years old. And so was born Lazertron. At the time, the interactive game Lazer Tag was a nationwide phenomenon among youngsters, and the NWA decided that the best way to win over the WWF's young fans would be to create a "robot" character who wore Lazer Tag gear. No, really. Unfortunately, NWA fans, most of them older "wrestling purists", couldn't stand the guy, and when Lazertron and his partner Jimmy Valiant feuded with the supposedly heel team the New Breed (who, incidentally, were time travelers from the future sent to destroy the Rock n' Roll Express, but that's another story), the New Breed usually got a bigger face pop than the "faces". Even more unfortunately, the guy behind the gimmick was an incredibly talented worker from a famous wrestling family who deserved much, much better. And Hector Guerrero- brother to Eddy and uncle to Chavo, Jr.- never really recovered from the stigma of such an incredibly stupid gimmick.
