New Japan competitor Black Tiger, who won the prestigious Top of the Super Juniors tournament in 1996, actually made a name for himself under a different masked persona. In Mexican promotion EMLL in the early 90's, Tiger was known as Mascara Magica. After Magica left EMLL and joined upstart Mexican promotion AAA, he became the first Mexican wrestler to voluntarily unmask himself, and soon turned heel and joined up with the late "Love Machine" Art Barr to form the legendary tag team Los Gringos Locos. After Barr's death in 1994, Tiger, under his real name, made his presence felt in the United States for the first time by entering ECW and working a series of matches with Dean Malenko. The two traded the ECW TV title several times before contractual obligations forced Tiger out of ECW and back to New Japan, where he had wrestled under his real name briefly before (more successfully) beginning the Black Tiger gimmick, envisioned as sort of a "bizarro" version of Japan's long-running Tiger Mask persona. New Japan's ties with WCW led Tiger to split time between the two promotions, in Japan as Black Tiger, and unmasked in WCW, as he had been in AAA and ECW, as...Eddy Guerrero. And the rest, at least among the countless internet smarts who treat Eddy as the Second Coming, is history.
